There are five ways to take advantage of the Home Energy Efficiency Improvement Tax Credit
1. Attic and/or basement. The U.S. Dept. of Energy estimates tht 40% of all air leaks in the average home are in the attic. Well insulated and sealed homes could save up to 30%. Most homes need up to 18" of attic insulation for proper thermal efficiency.
2. Windows and skylights. Replace with energy-efficient versions. Qualified windows and skylights (ALL ENERGY STAR) are eligible for the tax credit and aid the overall energy efficiency of a home.
3. Old storm doors and exterior doors. These older and poorly insulated doors contribute significantly to air leakage. Replacement can better maintain the overall temperature of a home and reduce cold drafts.
4. Old Furnances. Replacement with an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) furnance rating of 95% or higher can not only heat better but can reduce the impact of energy pollution and promotes cleaner air quality.
5. Solar Energy System. The tax credit for this ran out December 31, 2007; however, if a homeowner can get afford it, the systems provide hemeowners with a low-cost alternative to traditional energy sources.
To redeem the federal energy efficiency home improvement tax credit, homeowners must provide a Manufacturer's Certification Statement, purchase receipt and use IRS Form 5695. It is MY RECOMMENDATION that you check these sites prior to purchasing any product you are expecting to get a credit to make sure you have the correct product!!
